Trends are called trends for a reason. They’re not always meant to last. You may try them out for a season and some stick around for a few more. Whether it’s a total Man Repeller or just to the point of saturation that it’s seen ad nauseam, some trends just need to retire from the fashion world already. Don’t you agree? Here are my picks at what can go away and some fresher looks you may want to try out instead.
Retire This Trend: THE WEDGE SNEAKER
Sure, it seemed like a great idea to wear a wedge disguised as an effortless, comfy shoe (thanks Isabel Marant), but not there’s nothing pretty about these clunkers on your feet—especially with the plethora of tacky knock-offs that trickled down over the past couple of years since these became popular.
Wear this instead: THE NEW BALANCE TRAINERS
These casual New Balance sneakers in just about every color are everywhere now. They’re much more streamlined and dude-friendly. They look great with your jeans or to keep a pants suit casual and fun.
Retire This Trend: THE PEPLUM TOP
The peplum top was pretty exciting when it began infiltrating our fashionable lives a few seasons ago. Now it’s just adding bulk to the widest part of your hips and is looking cheap and tired.
Wear this instead: THE BOXY SHIFT TOP
This fresh silhouette was all over the runways for spring and looked great paired with slim leg pants. The exaggerated shape conceals all of the areas that us ladies are insecure about and still makes for a modern looking style.
Retire This Trend: THE HIGH-LOW SKIRT
Whether you call this the high-low or the “shark bite” skirt, this style is the mullet of fashion—minus the business in the front and the party in the back. It’s confusing and just plain weird. Pick a length!
Wear this instead: A FULL / MIDI SKIRT
This silhouette is much more flattering, classy and though it seems retro, when it’s in modern fabrics, high-waisted and paired with a crop top, it’s feeling pretty fresh.
