I went to my dear and talented friend, Kate’s art opening last night at the Brooklyn bar in Dumbo, ReBar. Her amazing art for this exhibition —which is already almost sold out—was inspired by the city she lives in with the subject and the various styles.
Like Kate, my wardrobe is also inspired by my city. Someone at the exhibition even told me I must either work in fashion or just be a typical stylish New Yorker. I replied, “both.”
It occurred to me that I normally feel like I have to tone down my wardrobe when I travel. On a recent trip to Miami, I got lots of strange looks when I walked into a trendy hotel wearing all black and combat boots. Upon visiting Boston, I had to switch from heels to flip flops to avoid looking like an outcast on Newbury Street. Though, sometimes attention can be good. (How can you not check out those great boots??).
I think I’m going vow to myself to take my New York City look with me wherever I go. It’s like my own traveling art exhibition.
