I swear this was unplanned: My stylish friend who is also in the fashion industry, Sharon Gilligan, happened to dress in the West Coast version of my outfit today. Though she is also a fellow Northeaster at heart, she’s been living as a California girl for years and it shows. She always seems to mix her preppy looks with some effortlessly chic L.A. style—complete with a fair dose of vintage. (Love her!).
As you may recall from this post, Sharon also shares my love for wearing our parents’ old wardrobe favorites like our dads’ old braided belts, not to mention skull jewelry and fun bracelets. Otherwise, you can tell from my edgier pieces that I hail from the opposite side of the country.
Are you an East Coast or West Coast style gal at heart?

FAQs
Can my personal style be influenced by where I live?
Absolutely. Climate, lifestyle, and even the pace of your city can influence how you dress. That doesn’t mean you have to fit into a specific style category, but your surroundings often play a role in your wardrobe choices.
What if I like elements of multiple style aesthetics?
That’s completely normal. Most women don’t fit neatly into one style category. In fact, combining different influences is often what makes personal style feel unique and authentic. If you’re trying to identify your style mix, my personal style quiz can help you uncover the aesthetics that feel most like you.
How do I make a style trend work for my lifestyle?
Before buying into a trend, think about how it fits into your everyday life. The best trends are the ones that complement your existing wardrobe and feel natural to wear.
Can personal style evolve over time?
Yes, and it often does. Your style may change as your career, lifestyle, interests, or priorities shift. The goal isn’t to stay the same forever but to build a wardrobe that reflects who you are right now.
How do I experiment with a new style without replacing my wardrobe?
Start small. Adding a new accessory, silhouette, or color palette can help you explore a different look without making major changes to your closet.
Why do some outfits feel more like “me” than others?
Usually it’s because they align with your lifestyle, personality, and comfort level. The outfits you reach for repeatedly often reveal more about your personal style than any trend forecast.
How can I make my outfits feel more intentional?
Pay attention to the finishing touches. Simple details like accessories, proportions, and thoughtful layering can help an outfit feel more complete.
Is it okay to wear trends if they don’t fit my usual style?
Of course. Personal style isn’t about following strict rules. If a trend excites you and makes you feel confident, there’s always a way to incorporate it into your wardrobe.
How do I stop buying clothes that I never wear?
Before purchasing something new, think about where you’ll wear it and what you’ll pair it with. If you can immediately create several outfits, it’s more likely to become a piece you actually reach for. During The Closet Refresh®, we identify wardrobe gaps and shopping habits to help clients buy more intentionally.
What’s the best way to develop a signature style?
Pay attention to the outfits that consistently make you feel confident. Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns in the colors, silhouettes, and pieces you love most, which can help shape your personal style.
