Buy Quality that Lasts

Earth Day is next week (April 22nd), so let’s talk sustainability in fashion- something that I passionate about for both myself and my clients.
My philosophy: the most sustainable wardrobe is one you actually wear. That means buying quality pieces that last, shopping resale when you can, and caring properly for what you already own.
This is my number one rule, Earth Day or not.
One quality cashmere sweater you’ll wear for 10 years is infinitely more sustainable than five cheap ones you’ll replace every season. Same goes for jeans, blazers, coats, and basics.
What to look for
- Natural fibers (think cotton, wool, silk, linen, cashmere)
- Quality construction and stitching
- Classic styles that won’t feel dated in a year
- Brands that specialize in what they’re making
Shop Resale & Secondhand
Some of my best finds are pre-owned pieces. You get quality at a better price point, and you’re keeping perfectly good clothing in circulation.
reRHONE
Rhone launched their resale platform- preloved performance pieces that have been inspected, cleaned, and are ready for another go. I’ve been a Rhone fan for years (my husband too!), and this program is exactly the kind of circular fashion I want to support.

M.M.LaFleur Second Act
One of my go-to brands for work staples now has a resale program. Quality workwear at discounted prices, and you’re giving these pieces a second life.

Pre-owned/Resale Sources I love:
- The RealReal– My go-to for late night shopping and investment purchases like the bag I just scored (everyone on IG is loving it!)
- Poshmark– Love shopping for vintage and bundling for kids’ clothing (LIZTEICH for $10 off)
- Vinted– Peer to peer, get a deal!
- Fashionphile – For bags
- What Goes Around Comes Around– Hard-to-find designer clothing and bags
- Yoogi’s Closet– Bags and shoes
- Second Edition– Support a local NY mom-owned biz!
- ThredUp– For kids especially
- Depop– For teens especially
- GOAT– For hard to find sneakers

Care for What You Own
The longest-lasting wardrobe is one that’s properly cared for
My care tips
- Use cold water – Saves energy and is gentler on fabrics
- Air dry when possible – Dryers are harsh on clothing
- Get things tailored – A $30 hem can make something you already own fit perfectly
- Repair instead of replace – Fix loose buttons, small holes, broken zippers, remove
- Store properly – Cedar blocks for moths, proper hangers for structure

The Most Sustainable Thing You Can Do

Make sure you build a wardrobe you both love and use. Before buying something new, ask yourself:
- Do I already own something similar?
- Will I wear this at least 30 times?
- Does this work with what I already have?
- Is this quality enough to last?
If the answer to any of those is no, take pause and ask yourself if you really need it.
