There are a few common misconceptions of being fashion stylist.
Quite often, clients think I have a closet of shoes, handbags, and other fabulous things that I bring to every shoot (false!). I do have a styling closet with basic jewelry/accessories, but most of the time I have to prep for the photoshoot, otherwise all of my shoots would look the same, not to mention, I would go broke!
Another false notion is that I get to keep all of the wardrobe and get lots of free things on shoots. Yes, this is very FALSE. If I’m lucky, I get to keep something that even the client refused to keep, and it ends up in my kit.
I once worked on a popular coffee brand’s ads and didn’t even get free coffee all day, other than the Box O’ Joe that I poured into cups as a prop!
What I do sometimes get, is an insider look at what’s coming out or marked down first…or at best, a discount. That’s huge for me, because I always need to have the latest fashion, but between being a new homeowner and taking a big vacation soon, I need to save.
I worked on a shoot for Lands’ End recently and got to go to the company’s store at their headquarters and scored this easy-breezy summer silk dress that was marked down to only $35 from it’s original price at $220 (it’s not available online, but you can score a similar dress for $20!).
The same thing happened when I scored these sandals from another client of mine, Gilt Groupe, which is another one of my favorite places to shop for major discounts.
Speaking of major discounts, like the jewelry you see here? Stay tuned for a special discount just for my readers!
