Complimentary Colors

JSDNYC top / ASOS pants and envelope clutch / Free People sunnies / H&M bangle / etc… braided cuff / earrings c/o Beth Lauren Jewelry

Once you get over the fear of color in your wardrobe, you’re ready for the next steps: playing with color.

STYLIST TIP: In case you missed art 101, shades of complimentary colors always are vibrant when they’re put together:

blue + orange

red + green

purple + yellow

They look especially good when they’re in the same family of shades like these colors (ie., pink + lime). The yellow in these sunglasses are in the same color family as the aqua and peach colors in the outfit, so it works nicely with the others. Any primary shades or neon colors added to the mix would probably look out of place.

Next time you’re stumped on your colorblocking skills, try this at home.

  1. Great tip!! I love the aqua and peach color combination. I just purchased a pair of Kelly green “statement” slacks. I’ll wear it with a black top (I have red hair) plus an accessory. Any color suggestions? Merci! Theadora (I love your site, by the way.)

    1. I love anything kelly green and I happen to own a pair of pants in that color as well. I like pairing it with an equally bold colored accessory. In the case of green, a bright complimentary red could read “Christmas” and pink could read very “Lily Pulitzer,” so I would pair it with another jewel tone like cobalt or purple. I actually wore mine the other day with a neon blue Cambridge Satchel. Have fun with it—especially being a red head (so jealous). xoLiz

  2. This was good reminder to think of how color combinations can make an impact. I love the softness of the orange and turquoise and even the yellow frames balanced by the neutrals and the lovely accessories. Very good tips!
