On “Courtney”: Vintage nightgown (c/o “Andi”) and necklace; Betsey Johnson slip and ribbon (from another dress); vintage tiara (Guvnor’s Vintage Thrift), Nine West maryjane platform shoes; “bruises” created with Revlon blue eyeshadow.
On “Kurt”: Chaser LA tee (Macy’s); Land’s End Canvas flannel shirt (similar on canvas.landsend.com); AllSaints Spitalfields jeans; Paul Smith belt (sample sale); vintage necklace; wig from St. Marks Street in NYC.
As you may have guessed by now, I love to dress up and dress other people as well. When I have to do it on a budget, it can be quite the challenge!
My goal for this Halloween was to spend under $20 for a couple’s costume. For our recession costume of 90’s iconic couple, Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, we got pretty resourceful, using things we already own, mixed with vintage cheapies and a recycled wig from my Garth costume.
Surprisingly the hardest part for me was finding a tiara! We drove around in the snow (what gives, Mother Nature?? It’s OCTOBER!) all morning in search for one. Apparently there were many Kate Middleton’s running around the city, because the only ones I could find were either over $50 or said “Happy Birthday” on them. Luckily the Park Slope thrift store, GUVNOR’S, pulled through and I scored the last one in the shop for only $12.99! The shop was packed with other savvy creative types putting together their last minute costumes.
Speaking of savvy creative types, here are some other great sensible Halloween ideas I saw this weekend…
Halloween cats done the right way.
Courtney’s lips get bigger and bigger.
This is the most creative Halloween decor I’ve ever seen done on a budget. Try this at home for your own Halloween party:
Pick up these cool Ikea globe shaped lamps for only $30 and paint a creative eye with water based glass paint, which you can get from your local art supply store. Place along side these yummy looking candy corn cookies and you’ll have one spooktacular shindig.
Have a safe and budget-friendly Halloween!
