I was working on a shoot this week that used a smoke machine to get a cool, foggy effect in the pictures. It got me thinking, most of the world doesn’t realize all of the smoke and mirrors we actually use behind the scenes (sometimes literally) before you see the image in a magazine, ad, or catalog.
Oddly enough I interviewed for a popular website last night on this subject. We talked about my favorite tips that us stylists do that people looking at these pictures may not know, including some that some people in the industry may not even be aware of (you’ll have to wait until the article is released for those).
Between our kits of clamps, pins, steaming, ironing, lint rollers, static guard, wrinkle release spray, topstick (double sided toupee tape), starch, cutlets (silicone bra inserts), etc. that we use on the clothes, they are bound to look good!
STYLIST TIP: IF YOU EVER ORDER SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T QUITE LOOK LIKE HOW IT FITS IN THE MAGAZINE/AD/CATALOG, BRING IT (AND THE PICTURE) TO YOUR TAILOR TO GET ALTERED. NOT EVERY GARMENT WILL FIT THE SAME ON EVERY BODY, SO EVEN THE SMALLEST ALTERATION CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
