I’ve been in wedding mode for the past couple of weeks—not for my own, but planning for an editorial that will be out this June. It’s every girl’s dream to plan a wedding, but it can be quite overwhelming when you see how many choices there are!

I’m amazed how many options are out there right now for the bride who doesn’t want the traditional white ball gown. My mother had an offbeat gown herself, opting for a blue dress with hand-painted flowers, following her hippie roots. My father’s non-traditional 3-piece suit was even stylin’ for the era.

In the Middle Ages, women wore bold colors and it wasn’t until Queen Victoria’s wedding that the white “pure” dress became popular. During the Depression, women just wore their best frock. Who says your wedding has to look like every other one right now??

For the non-conventional bride, artsy Monique Lhuillier gown would be a show stopper, but still has a bit of white to nod to the usual white gown.

How fun would this little blue number by Issa (the designer of Kate Middleton’s famous blue engagement dress) be for a destination wedding?

Too much blue for you? Maybe a subtle blue like this sweet Pour La Victoire shoe or a bracelet like this one by Dogeared Jewels with tiny sapphires (similar to what I wore on my own big day) will do.

However you keep this Victorian tradition of the “something blue” alive, may it bring luck to you and yours.
