What a whirlwind of a week or so it’s been between my jam-packed New York Fashion Week schedule and working on a shoot for Clinique and now a campaign for Rockport, I have total fashion fatigue. I’m happy to watch the previews in London, Paris and Milan from afar.
It was important for me to pace myself and stay cool in the crazy late summer heat we had. That’s why I went with this on-trend denim jumpsuit for the first official day of NYFW. It’s a piece worth investing in this season, even at an affordable price-point. Denim never goes out of style, so while it’s oh so 70’s, which is still going strong this season, you’ll have it for years to come. One of my favorite pieces in my closet is a denim dress by Lanvin x Acne. I still wear it often and you can even rent it from me this season when you sign up on Village Luxe with the code THEBROOKLYNSTYLIST.
Back to this jumpsuit though. It’s something I can wear during this end of this season, but also can’t wait to layer with long sleeves, and perhaps a turtleneck in the colder months.
It was also important to me to be comfortable while racing from show to presentation to event all day long. Taxis and Ubers add up and the subway was often a good walk from the venues. Now that there’s no home base for NYFW, I found myself using the coat check at Macy’s in Herald Square *a stylist trick* and traveling all over the west side of Manhattan. I would leave my apartment in Brooklyn early in the morning and not return until all of the events were over in the evening—probably the reason I looked bright eyed in the morning images above as opposed to the ones later in the evening.
I wasn’t the only one this season that had comfort in mind. There were more flats, comfortable shoes, and even every day looks like jeans than I’ve ever seen at fashion week. Stiletto heels were starting to look dated for the season and fashion girls got creative, even wearing booties with their outfits.
Dare I say street style is not the star of the show anymore now that the shows left Lincoln Center? It seemed there was a return to the focus of the collections, more in the way back in the Bryant Park days when I held the door for Anna Wintour and not one photographer was following her to catch an image.
Maybe it was that there was a crackdown on blogger invites this season and attendance had gone down, but it wasn’t as much of a spectacle as in the past. I also managed to sit in the front row to nearly every show I attended, even if I wasn’t assigned, because of the quiet turn out. There were far less crazy get-ups in the front row, seeking attention to get snapped by a street style photographer, but there were actually fashionable people.
The one impractical trend I noticed was that handbags were getting smaller and smaller. I’m not sure if these ladies are using my coat check trick or just taking taxis to and from a hotel, but their bags were looking like you can’t carry more than a lipstick, iPhone and change purse. If I have to downsize my handbag, this cross body from one of my favorite indie bag designers of the moment, Joanna Maxham, is at the perfect size and shape to complete an of the season look, without desperately seeking attention like we saw in past NYFW street style.

Like you probably do, I find street style fascinating and really what has been driving trends in the past few years, but stay tuned for what I actually saw from the designers at NYFW and what trends I’m predicting for spring 2016!
