The hardest part of being pregnant isn’t the morning sickness (it goes away eventually), and it isn’t the planning of everything you will need for the little one’s arrival (it’s actually kind of fun). It’s dressing for a whole new body you haven’t had before without sacrificing style.
As I’m currently in my third trimester (eek!), I’m starting to get it down to almost a formula at this point. I’ve built a new wardrobe from scratch around cool girl basics. This has helped as I’ve been traveling a ton lately and makes it much easier to pack. The past couple of weeks I flew to San Francisco for fun (pictured here), then straight to LA, drove to San Diego, flew to Boston, and back to NY, all for work. Despite experiencing everything from perfect 75 degree weather to a blizzard that shut down a city, I was prepared for it all with my interchangeable wardrobe.
You can’t go wrong with a classic top like a black turtleneck. To me it’s like a blank canvas that not only keeps you warm, but sets as a foundation for more fun pieces to layer over like a dress or this army green Marissa Webb vest. The vest was one of my favorite rentals ever from Rent The Runway, but luckily they made me realize I could size up (from a small to a large!) to wear it again.
I’ve been obsessed with everything by Opening Ceremony on Rent The Runway as well, which are kind of like basics with a twist. Case in point: this bag. It’s kind of like a basic every day black bag that goes with everything, but the pop of teal snakeskin and the whimsical hardware take an outfit to another level. I even tucked in the strap and made it into a clutch for the few times I went out in the evenings (when I had occasionally the energy!).
STYLIST TIP: I was psyched to find a pair of maternity jeans that were basic, every day style, but still actually on trend like these. If you already have a plethora of jeans in your life and feel like you need a refresh, all you need to do is update the hem. I did this on a shoot recently and it completely changed the look, selling the clients on the jeans. You can 1) cut the finished hem off and leave it as a raw, frayed edge. 2) Do that and crop your pants, especially if you have an old pair of flares 3) Do step 1 and create a “step hem” like seen here, where the front is a good inch or so shorter than the back. Voila! Your basic jeans are anything but basic anymore.
