One of the most frequent things I get asked by clients is “what’s the most flattering on me?” It really varies and a lot is what YOU feel best in, so use my chart for “the best jeans by body type” as a guide and don’t let it stop you from wearing what you love.

I still wear straight leg even though it’s not the most flattering for my pear shape. My favorite jeans have always been wide leg jeans though. I used to wear it back in 2011 when everyone was obsessing over skinny jeans.  It’s no wonder why it’s popularity always comes back — it always looks good and on everyone. It balances out your shape, conceals wider hips/legs and exaggerates your legs (yes, petites you CAN and should wear wide leg jeans).

If you’re unsure of your shape type, here’s a breakdown (you can also use your measurements to determine):

APPLE: curvier, no defined waist
PEAR: bigger in hips than upper body
HOURGLASS: curvy with balanced upper and lower body with waist definition
INVERTED TRIANGLE: bigger in upper body than hips
RECTANGLE: straight throughout, no defined waist

FAQs

How to find the best jeans for my body type?

Start by focusing on fit rather than trends. The best jeans are the ones that complement your proportions, feel comfortable, and work with your lifestyle. While certain silhouettes tend to flatter specific body shapes, finding a pair that makes you feel confident is just as important as following body type recommendations.

Do I have to follow body type rules when shopping for jeans?

Not at all. Body type guidelines can be helpful, but they’re not meant to limit your choices. Think of them as a starting point. If you love how a particular style looks and feels on you, that’s what matters most. If you’re looking for more personalized guidance, The Closet Refresh® can help you identify the silhouettes and styling choices that work best for your body, lifestyle, and personal style.

What jean styles are the most universally flattering?

Straight-leg, bootcut, and wide-leg jeans tend to work well for many body shapes because they create balance and pair easily with different tops and shoes. These styles are also versatile enough to dress up or down, making them wardrobe staples for many women.

Are wide-leg jeans flattering on all body types?

Wide-leg jeans can work beautifully on a variety of body shapes when the fit is right. The key is finding the correct rise, inseam, and proportion for your frame. They can add balance to your silhouette while creating a polished, effortless look.

What if I have curves and struggle to find jeans that fit?

You’re not alone. Many women find that jeans fit in one area but not another. Look for styles designed with extra room through the hips and thighs, and don’t be afraid to try different brands. A great fit should feel comfortable at the waist without sacrificing comfort elsewhere.

Should I choose high-rise or mid-rise jeans?

Both can be great options. High-rise jeans often provide more coverage and waist definition, while mid-rise jeans can feel comfortable and versatile for everyday wear. The best choice depends on your body shape, length of your torso, and the outfits you wear most often.

Are skinny jeans out of style?

Skinny jeans may not be the trend of the moment, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of style. If they work well for your body, fit your lifestyle, and make you feel confident, they’re still worth wearing. You can just bring them into the present with how you style them. I still keep my skinny jeans for tucking into boots in certain situations. Not sure which styles suit you best? Take my find my style quiz here.

Why do jeans fit differently from one brand to another?

Every brand uses its own sizing, cuts, and fit models. That’s why you may wear different sizes across brands or find that one style fits much better than another. Paying attention to fit details rather than the number on the tag can make shopping less frustrating.

How many pairs of jeans should I have in my wardrobe?

Most women benefit from having a few versatile pairs that work for different occasions. A casual everyday pair, a slightly dressier option, and a favorite go-to silhouette are often enough to create plenty of outfit combinations without overcrowding your closet.

What’s the biggest mistake women make when shopping for jeans?

Many women focus on trends before fit. A pair of jeans can be popular, but if it doesn’t feel comfortable or work with your wardrobe, it probably won’t get much wear. I think the recent barrel jeans trend is a great example of this. The best jeans are the ones you’ll reach for again and again because they fit well and make getting dressed easier.
