It’s a scorcher out there in NYC and it’s only the start of summer. Yesterday I sweat through a dress within 5 minutes of walking outside. Between the heat and a toddler who manages to get his dirty hands all over my clothes, my dry cleaning bills are getting way too high for my taste.
When I shop for summer fashion, I like to find fabrics that are both breathable and machine washable, and not to mention, won’t break the bank! I also love anything that’s a one-and-done kind of piece like a jumpsuit. My goal for summers is to be low-maintenance, less time fussing, so I can be outside more.
It’s probably no secret now that & Other Stories is my go-to source for affordable fashion that looks like it’s from a fancy European boutique but unlike designer clothing, their designs work with my #momlife and budget. It’s also where I’m stocking up for my easy breezy summer fashion that won’t break the bank.

Jumpsuit, bag (sold out, similar here) and sandals all c/o & Other Stories
The pieces you see here have been some of my most worn so far in the warm weather. The jumpsuit is only $69(!!) and while the fabric is just a stretchy ponte style cotton, the cut of the jumpsuit is so modern and flattering. Oh and did I mention, I threw it in the wash and it still looks amazing!
My jumpsuit was briefly sold out (which happens often — sometimes you get lucky and they restock!) so I recommended this one and this one to someone who loved it on Instagram recently.
These very on trend square toe kitten heel sandals are a steal for $129 because they’ll make any outfit feel instantly updated for this season. They also happen to be super comfortable so I’ve been living in them with everything!
I also have my eye on this similar shoe with a pop of color and if I could handle heels, these heeled sandals as well.
You may remember I wore this amazing woven bag on my recent trip to the Bahamas as well as pretty much all of the time. Unfortunately it sold out recently, but here’s a bag.
As if I don’t have enough bags, I’m crushing on this bag and this one next. Which do you prefer?

FAQs
What fabrics are best to wear in hot weather?
Lightweight, breathable fabrics such as linen, cotton, and certain natural blends are great options for staying cool. These materials allow for better airflow and can help you feel more comfortable on hot and humid days. Get on my email list to get my favorite summer finds and curated linen list during the season!.
How can I look polished without layering in the summer?
Focus on pieces with structure and intentional details. A well-fitting dress, tailored shorts, or a polished matching set can create a put-together look without requiring multiple layers. Not to mention a matching set in linen is the ultimate mom-uniform!
What colors are best for hot weather?
Lighter colors tend to reflect heat rather than absorb it, making them a popular choice during warmer months. White, cream, beige, light blue, and soft pastels can help keep your outfit feeling fresh and seasonally appropriate. Summer whites are truly my fav!
How do I prevent sweat from ruining my outfit?
Choosing breathable fabrics and looser silhouettes can help minimize visible sweat. Wearing moisture-wicking undergarments and avoiding overly tight clothing can also make a big difference on especially hot days.
Can I still wear black during the summer?
Absolutely. Black can look chic year-round. The key is choosing lightweight fabrics and breezy silhouettes that won’t feel heavy or restrictive in the heat.
What shoes are most comfortable for walking in hot weather?
Comfortable sandals, supportive slides, and lightweight sneakers are all great options. Look for styles that allow your feet to breathe while providing enough support for long days on your feet. Listen, as a New Yorker, I know how essential summer sandals that don’t hurt are. You can find my top picks here.
How can I stay stylish when it’s too hot for jeans?
Dresses, skirts, linen trousers, and tailored shorts can be excellent alternatives. These pieces often feel cooler while still looking polished. If you’re feeling like ‘you have nothing to wear’, it might be a great time to book The Closet Refresh® and get a focused shopping list while reviewing what you already have.
What are the best summer wardrobe staples?
I love a few versatile dresses, breathable tops, linen pants, tailored shorts, comfortable sandals, and a lightweight layer for air-conditioned spaces. These pieces can be mixed and matched throughout the season.
How can I make a casual summer outfit look more elevated?
Simple styling details can make a big difference. Accessories, structured handbags, polished footwear, and intentional jewelry can instantly elevate even the most casual summer outfit. The sunglasses are always key here!
Are loose clothes better for hot weather?
In many cases, yes. Looser silhouettes can improve airflow and help keep you more comfortable in the heat. They can also create an effortlessly chic look when styled thoughtfully.
How do I dress for a summer event without overheating?
Choose lightweight fabrics and silhouettes that allow movement. Dresses, jumpsuits, and wide-leg pants are often comfortable options that can still feel dressy enough for weddings, parties, and outdoor events.
What’s the easiest way to build a summer capsule wardrobe?
Start with versatile pieces that work together. Focus on neutral basics, a few seasonal colors, comfortable footwear, and lightweight layers. The goal is to create multiple outfit combinations without overfilling your closet. Need help? Book The Closet Refresh ®
Can accessories make a summer outfit look more stylish?
Definitely. Sunglasses, jewelry, belts, handbags, and hats can add personality and polish to simple outfits while helping you stay comfortable in warm weather.
How do I dress professionally when it’s hot outside?
Look for lightweight fabrics in tailored silhouettes. Sleeveless blouses, linen trousers, midi dresses, and breathable blazers can help you maintain a professional appearance without sacrificing comfort.
What’s the biggest mistake people make when dressing for hot weather?
Many people focus solely on staying cool and forget about fit and proportion. The most successful warm-weather outfits balance comfort with intentional styling, allowing you to feel comfortable while still looking put together.
